Octubre ya está a la altura de su reputación volátil
Las tendencias históricas de cara a octubre apuntaban a un mes agitado por delante. La sesión del martes lo confirmó. El S&P 500 cayó casi un 1% al iniciar el nuevo mes de operaciones. El Nasdaq Composite perdió más del 1,5% y el Dow Jones Industrial Average perdió un 0,4%, o 173 puntos. Esas caídas se produjeron cuando las tensiones en Medio Oriente aumentaron después de que Irán lanzó misiles balísticos contra Israel. Mientras tanto, las fuerzas israelíes iniciaron una operación terrestre en el sur del Líbano. La noticia hizo que los precios del crudo se dispararan y los inversores están reforzando su protección. Los futuros del West Texas Intermediate subieron un 2% el martes. El miércoles, el petróleo subió otro 3%. El índice de volatilidad Cboe, el indicador de miedo preferido de Wall Street, subió hasta 20, su nivel más alto desde el 11 de septiembre. El VIX cotizó por encima de 19 el miércoles. Scott Rubner, especialista táctico de Goldman Sachs, espera que esta agitación persista durante las próximas semanas. “Soy tácticamente bajista con respecto a las acciones estadounidenses durante las próximas tres semanas. Me estoy preparando para una mayor volatilidad y que el mercado negocie demasiado los titulares y temas diarios”, dijo en una nota a sus clientes el miércoles. “Hay un desajuste entre la oferta y la demanda, y el sesgo es a la baja”. También es probable que se mantengan las presiones estacionales. CNBC Pro descubrió que el S&P 500 promedia un movimiento diario del 1,3% en cualquier dirección en octubre, según datos de FactSet que se remontan a 1950. Además de eso, el índice de referencia ha experimentado una caída promedio en octubre de casi el 1% durante todo el mes durante los años electorales, según el Stock Trader’s Almanac. En pocas palabras: esto puede ser sólo el comienzo de un período de revueltas para el mercado. En otra parte de Wall Street esta mañana, Baird rebajó la calificación del fabricante de motocicletas Harley-Davidson, con sede en Milwaukee, a neutral desde comprar. “Nos pusimos en contacto con los concesionarios Harley-Davidson para obtener una actualización sobre las tendencias del tercer trimestre. Los concesionarios informaron de un comercio minorista débil, un exceso de inventario y un sentimiento cáustico, todo lo cual sugiere un riesgo para las previsiones”, escribió Baird.
